Landscapes and Landforms

About this excursion

Explore the spectacular landscape of Nattai National Park, part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area while learning the skills of a geographer. Using maps, field sketching and observation, students investigate the features and characteristics of this unique landscape and its landforms. students use relevant geographic tools to collect quantitative data about the biophysical features of the environment and observe first-hand evidence of geomorphic processes including tectonic activity, weathering, erosion and deposition.

Excursion activities

Session 1: Geographic Significance and fieldwork
Students view satellite images and raised relief map and discuss the geographic significance of the area. Students then identify and learn to use a range of geographic tools and techniques before heading out to out quadrats to collect quantitative data using appropriate tools.
Lunch
Students have recess before activities and a lunch break between session 1 and session 2.
Session 2: Bushwalk and geographic skills
Students take a bushwalk to view evidence of geomorphic processes, practice the skill of field sketching, and learn about the Aboriginal story of Gurangatch and Mirrangan and how these Dreamtime creatures created the landscape of the Blue Mountains.
