Amazing Adaptations

About this excursion

Step into the wild with this introduction to the world of scientific investigation! As they explore the features that make up our unique bush environment, students will learn key research and teamwork skills used by rangers and scientists. From completing soil tests, to measuring atmospheric conditions to observing evidence of native animal species, students will apply their knowledge of plant and animal adaptations to suggest how these may help them survive in their environment.

Excursion activities

Session 1: Environmental investigation
Students use scientific equipment to collect data on the environment in our designated quadrats as well as using personal observations to detect evidence of animal life in the forest.
Lunch
Students have recess before activities and a lunch break between session 1 and session 2.
Session 2: Animal and Plant Adaptations
In our interactive classroom, students identify structural and behavioural adaptations of flora and fauna found at Wooglemai, before heading outside to create short documentary films to explain the specific adaptations of a chosen plant or animal to its’ environment.

Important information

Cost
$8 per student
Learning intentions
  • We are learning to describe the structural and behavioural adaptations of native animals and plants.
  • We are learning to collect and interpret data about the environment
Key syllabus outcomes and content

ST3-SCI-01 uses evidence to explain how scientific knowledge can be used to develop sustainable practices

Living things may change over millions of years, in response to their environments

  • Observe behavioural and structural adaptations of plants and animals, and suggest how these may help them survive in their environments
  • Examine and explain how the characteristics of flowers, fruit and seeds are adaptations for reproduction in plants

Earth's climate is affected by natural and human activities

  • Identify the technologies used to collect weather data and describe how they are used

ST3-PQU-01 poses questions to identify variables and conducts fair tests to gather data

ST3-DAT-01 interprets data to support explanations and arguments

Tier 2 and Tier 3 Vocabulary:

Ecosystem, environment, sustainability, adaptation, behavioural, structural, characteristic, food web, native, introduced, thermometer, anemometer, compass, humidity.
