National Parks

About this excursion

Explore the history, features and cultural value of Nattai National Park, part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, on a sensory bushwalk, immersing students in the sights, sounds, smells and feel of the natural environment. Insights into sustainability, land management, and Aboriginal food practices are developed as students search for bush tucker plants and create their own model shelters. Students synthesise their learning from the day into a short presentation on the value of National Parks and the role of a Park Ranger.

Excursion activities

Session 1: Bushwalk and structured discussion
Our day commences with an exploration of the Nattai National Park surrounding Wooglemai to survey the biodiversity of forest plant species, search for evidence of fauna, and catch and identify local invertebrates. We also examine local Aboriginal history and land use, as well as the potential for human impact on the forest.
Lunch
Students have recess before activities and a lunch break between session 1 and session 2.
Session 2: How do people care for environments?
Students observe Google Earth images of Nattai National Park and The Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area and compare these images to other areas on NSW. Students then view a short video on the role of a NPWS ranger and work in groups to create a presentation or video to summarise the value of National Parks and how they can be managed.
